Spelling - Words Their Way

How it works: Each student was given a spelling assessment, words ranging from bed to fortunate.  Student data was put into the Words Their Way program and a placement was provided based on their spelling skills.  This spelling program fills gaps in student learning and also excels students who need more of a challenge.

How can I help: Spelling practice should be done nightly.  Success of this program is doing the sorts every night.  Here is a schedule to help your child be successful.

  • Monday: Have students cut their words apart.  Sort words according to their category.  Have your child explain to you why the words belong in the category they sorted them into. (This is only a sorting and discussion night).
  • Tuesday: Students once again sort their words into categories and write them down accordingly. Please check your child's work.
  • Wednesday: Students sort their words into categories.  They can either color their category spelling or they can alphabetize each category and record their sort.
  • Thursday: Give your child a spelling pre-test; they get a point for the word being in the correct category and a point for spelling the word correctly.
  • Friday: Turn in all spelling sorts done at home.
